party?â
âSaturday morning?â Katie asked.
âOr we could bake Friday night and decorate Saturday morning,â Emma suggested. âItâs always easier to decorate when the cupcakes are cool.â
My mind was racing. Friday night. Saturday morning. When would I find time to sew?
âUm, would you guys mind if I skipped baking Friday night?â I asked. âI only have a week to sew the dress for the contest and . . .â
âOf course!â Katie said quickly. âBut you can decorate Saturday morning, right? I mean, we really need you for that.â
I nodded. Iâd make it work somehow. âSure.â
âThat works for me,â Alexis said. âAnd that will give us time to get ready for the party that night.â
The timer went off, and Alexis took the cupcakes out of the oven. Katie did that trick where you stick a toothpick in the center, and if it comes up clean, it means the cupcakes are done. Then we put them in the fridge to cool off quickly, because if you put icing on warm cupcakes, it will just be a melted mess.
We started talking about Georgeâs party again.
âSo, Katie, are you and George going to his party together?â Alexis asked.
âWell, George will already be there, so itâs not like we can go together,â Katie said.
âYou know what I mean,â Alexis said. âAre yougoing together, like hanging out at the party as a couple?â
Katieâs cheeks turned pink, and she shrugged. âNot really. Itâs not like a school dance or something. And itâs not like he asked me. Why, are you going with Matt?â
Matt is Emmaâs brother, whoâs a grade above us. Sometimes it seems like he and Alexis are all flirty with each other, and other times theyâre just friends. Itâs sometimes really weird for Emma to be in the middle.
Now Alexisâs cheeks turned pink. âWell, George only invited kids from our grade, so Mattâs not going.â Then she looked at me. âWhat about you and Chris?â
Iâm pretty sure Chris likes me, because we have gone to stuff together, like the pep rally parade. Iâd been so busy working on the dress that it hadnât occurred to me that Chris hadnât asked me to go to the party with him yet.
âUm, I donât know,â I answered, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. âI havenât talked to him much lately.â
âWell, the partyâs still a week away,â Katie said. âMaybe heâs just waiting to ask you.â
I shrugged. âThereâs no rule that says he has toask me to go with him. As long as weâre both there, right?â
âOf course,â Emma assured me, only I wasnât feeling so assured. It was kind of weird that Chris hadnât asked me yet.
Katie opened the fridge and poked one of the cupcakes. âTheyâre good,â she said. âLetâs get decorating.â
âWe should taste test one without icing first, to see how the pumpkin flavor came out,â Alexis suggested.
âGood idea,â Katie agreed. She cut one of the cupcakes into four pieces, and we each took a bite.
âMmm, pumpkiny!â Emma said.
âYes, the pumpkin flavor is nice,â Katie said thoughtfully. âIt might just need a pinch more cinnamon, though.â
I looked at the bowls of icing that Emma and Alexis had made: lime green, orange, purple, and dark chocolate brown.
âSo, letâs do, like, four cupcakes in each color,â I suggested. âThen we can try different techniques on each.â
Katie raised her hand. âI call purple!â
A few minutes later we had the whole batch iced, and I quickly forgot about my dress and Chriswhile we experimented with the decorations. First, I took a chocolate-iced cupcake and stuck four pieces of licorice on each side to make spider legs. Then I added candy eyeballs.
âHmm,â I mused,
