with her and sometimes hot flashes woke her up and then she would start to think. Instead of waking him with her insomnia, she would either go downstairs or out in the yard and sit for a while as her body cooled and she tried to work out whatever thoughts were troubling her.
“I’m hungry. I thought I’d go downstairs and find something to snack on,” she said as she pulled a T-shirt nightgown over her head.
Before Martin could respond, Robert lifted his head from the pillow and looked at her. “Bring back enough to share with everyone.”
“Yes, sir,” she snarked, giving the retired Admiral a left-handed salute before twisting her hand around and flipping him the bird.
“Baby, you keep that up, you might find yourself across my lap getting a spanking for disrespecting an officer and a gentleman,” Robert returned with a sleepy smile.
Martin chuckled. “I’d like to see that.”
“Be careful, gentlemen, or I’ll just eat in the kitchen and not bring back anything.” She pulled on a pair of sweatpants then stuffed her feet into a pair of clogs. She walked out the door, leaving it open partway so she could find her way back.
“Wait up and we’ll go with you,” Robert said as he got up and reached for his jeans.
“We will?” Martin said, sitting up and staring at his brother through the light coming from a nightlight in the bathroom.
“Yes, we will. We can’t have a beautiful woman running around the place all alone. A bear might eat her or something.”
“But she’s just going to the kitchen,” Martin pointed out.
“Fine, go back to sleep. I’m going downstairs with Anna. Maybe we’ll try out that giant couch in front of the fireplace. Or maybe one of the chairs in the reading nook,” Robert said with a grin.
“Like hell,” Martin muttered as he rolled out of bed and pulled on his pants.
A sliver of a dark emotion stabbed at his heart at the thought of his brother and his wife wandering around alone. He trusted Anna. Robert was his brother. But something about the two of them spending time alone did not sit well with him, but he refused to acknowledge it as jealousy.
Though he and Anna still made love several times a week, it had been a long time since he had come more than once a day and he had already come twice in the past few hours. The thought of watching Anna and Robert made his cock twitch with interest. His breath caught as he adjusted his cock in order to get his zipper up.
Besides, he was awake and hungry, too. Bridget had been true to her word and, when they had not appeared in response to the dinner bell, had brought up a wicker picnic basket full of finger foods. She had left it at their door with a banging knock that woke them from postcoital napping. His stomach clenched, demanding he go with the others and find a snack as well.
On his way out the door, he picked up the basket that Anna had repacked after they ate their dinner a while later. Stepping out of the room, Martin followed his brother toward the staircase. Anna was already descending the stairs as if she had done this a time or two before. She probably had, but he had slept through them on their previous visits to Sanctuary.
As Martin started down the stairs, a feeling that something was not right shivered up his spine. Thanks to numerous night lights placed around the big main room, he was able to look around, but he did not see anything out of place. Nothing had been changed or moved since their last visit the month before. Except for Anna and Robert, no one moved about that would cause his sixth sense to go on alert. But his gut, the spot between his stomach and his heart, screamed that something was off.
By the time he reached Spring’s coffee bar in the center of the room, Anna stepped into the kitchen and flipped the switch for the kitchen and dining area lights. With the additional lighting, he looked around again. When he reached the small area tucked near the front door, he frowned, trying to see
