Captain Prtglm back to the
KTTS
at 1130. She logged that and saw them depart.â
ââPorting doesnât take Rojer more than thirty seconds. Whereâd he go then? Did the ensign see?â
âSir, log says that Rojer accompanied the captain. At its request evidently. He had his âDinis with him.â
âSo?â
âCom officer of the
KTTS
says that neither the Human Rojer nor his âDinis are on board.â
âIs there a record of when Rojer âported back here?â
âAccording to their records, the captainâs pod is still in place and the Human Rojer has not approached anyone on the
KTTS.
The big pod did not return here.â
âAw, now wait a bleeding minuteâ¦â Metrios began intotal disgust. âIf the pod is over there, on the
KTTS
, Rojer has to be there. Talents donât generally âport themselves about in a space vacuum. Dangerous. And whatâs he been doing there for over eight hours anyway?â
âI should very much like to know,â the captain said in a tight controlled voice.
âThis isnât like Rojer,â Anis Langio said.
âDammit, Anis, I know that,â Osullivan said, shifting about in his command chair, his face grim. âMetrios, any power use consistent with a long-distance âport?â
âNo, sir,â the engineering officer said with only the briefest of glances at his station printout. âAnd thereâs no way Rojer could âport all the way back to Aurigae, or even Clarf, which is spatially nearer.â
Osullivan stared grimly at the digital time display as the seconds and hundreds turned over rapidly. His fingers rattled an agitated tattoo on his hand rest.
âSound a yellow alert. Shipâs crew to locate Mr. Lyon. This ship is to be searched stem to stern. Alert Captain Quacho. Doplas, I want to speak to Captain Prtglm.â
âIt hasnât been available, sir,â Doplas said in a semiapologetic tone.
âItâll be available to me, Doplas!â Osullivanâs icy tone made Doplasâs fingers skip over the touchplates.
âPrtglm is not available for speech,â the âDini com officer said. â PRTGLM IS NOT AVAILABLE ,â it repeated in its own language to be sure the information was understood.
âWe search for Rojer Lyon,â Doplas said.
â RJR LN REPORT IMMEDIATELY TO THIS SHIP ,â Osullivan added to be sure the âDini officer also understood.
This time the âDini officer shook its upper body and then directed its poll eye fully at the screen. â NO HUMAN ON THE
KTTS .â The screen went blank.
âWhatâs all this about young Lyon disappearing?â demandedCaptain Quacho, his image illuminating the main screen. âWeâve supplies to come in and Iâve two crew needing to go back on the carrier. Iâve been waiting for Rojerâs signal to bring them over.â
âA full ship search is under way, Quacho. I understand Lyonâs disappearance no better than you do. And heâs not on the âDini ship!â Osullivan grimaced and he rubbed his jaw. If the boy had gone to the âDini ship, why hadnât he come back aboard the
Genesee
?
âSir?â an excited voice immediately captured his attention. âSir, one of the escape pods is gone.â
âWhich?â Osullivan snapped the query out in such a hard voice that even Doplas recoiled.
âOne-oh-eight, starboard, sir. And the controls were altered to make it appear to still be in place.â
No one on the bridge needed to remark that the one-oh-eight pod was the one assigned to Rojer Lyon.
âHas there been
any
activity
towards
the planet?â Osullivan demanded. When he received a negative reply, âOr toward that damned empty hull?â
âNo, sir. And Iâm scanning for a recent ion trail.â
âThe boy wouldnât have had to use the escape pod engine,
