asked suddenly as he slipped her into the
front seat .of the car he had rented. She looked up to find him watching her intently as he held the door. “I
had the strangest feeling you were… well… waiting for something.“
His mouth hardened. “I was expecting a scene, I suppose. I was waiting for you to rum into an
infuriated woman scorned. I had made it very clear I felt I’d won our little encounter and I thought your
temper would explode when you realized you’d lost completely.“
“I see,“ she whispered as he slid in beside her. “And what were you going to do after I’d tried to scratch
your eyes out?“
“Offer an affair,“ he said easily, starting the engine. He cast her a sideways glance. “But I never got the
chance. You simply accepted the situation and walked out the door. My first thought was to say the hell
with it I’d gotten what I wanted.“
“And since men,“ she said quite pleasantly, “I’ve gotten what I wanted. I really do owe you a lot, Trev. I
’ve always been curious about one thing, though.“
“What’s that?“ he asked quickly as he piloted the car out onto the road.
“Whatever became of your brother-in-law’s firm? No offense, but he’d managed to run that poor
company nearly into the ground. I’ve always wondered if someone else came along after me and took it
over anyway.“
“Someone else would have if I hadn’t spent the better part of the last six months putting John back on
his feet financially,“ Trev allowed grittily.
“So he had the sense to realize he needed expert help, hmmm?“
“Your nearly successful takeover bid scared the hell out of him,“
Trev agreed. “Afterward he was more than willing to listen to some advice.“
“Well, that satisfies the last bits of curiosity I have about my old life. Where are we going?“
“I’m told there’s an excellent place by the water in mat little shopping complex a couple of miles up the
road. Know it?“
“Yes, it’s very good“ Reyna nodded, thinking that he was taking her to the collection of boutiques and
restaurants she had chosen for her new gourmet shop. She smiled with pleasure as she ran through all the
statistics of the place she had picked. The square footage was adequate and there would be room for a
small wine collection. She’d have to make arrangements for a freezer and a chilled-foods cabinet
Tomorrow she would see the bank about a loan for inventory….
“Am I boring you already?“ Trev inquired blandly.
“Sorry, I was thinking of something else.“
“So I gathered. You never used to drift off in the middle of a conversation!“
His barely shielded annoyance made her chuckle. “I know. I used to hang on your every word. Ah,
sweet love!“
“It was,“ he retorted a little ruthlessly. “Very sweet And tender and gentle and a lot of other things I
didn’t have the sense to recognize at the time. They were new to me, Reyna. I didn’t know what to make
of them. I didn’t quite believe in them, I guess.“
“But you do now?“ she quipped, her disbelief plain in her words.
“Yes, damn it!“
“Then when you find the right woman you’ll be ready to respond properly next time, won’t you?“
“I think I could easily take to beating the new Reyna Mackenzie,“ he noted reflectively.
“I wouldn’t advise it,“ she drawled.
“No?“
“Might get your nice clothes all mussed up.“ Reyna grinned at him as he slid her a dark glance and
suddenly she felt very much on top of the situation. In charge, in control, serenely in command. She would
relax and enjoy the evening.
It proved easy to do. Trev was clearly determined to play the perfect escort and, as Reyna had
observed on more than one occasion, when he set his mind to a task, he performed it with dazzling ability.
The restaurant was a perfect setting for a sparkling evening. The casually lush decor took full advantage
of the ocean view, and the normally attentive service was a
