âBut she wanted me to call and make sure. Sheâ¦uhâ¦hmmmâ¦well, she wants to see us together.â
Josh frowned. âReally?â He didnât want to see Rachel again.
âYes. I donât know why, but I hope we can be civil to make her happy.â
âIâve never been uncivil to you, Rachel.â
A moment of silence passed.
âWell, I mean, we could refrain from fighting. Iâ I want to apologize for earlier,â she said in a rush.
The corner of his mouth lifted. At least one part of her hadnât changed. The old Rachel had always accepted responsibility for her actions.
âForget it.â He didnât need her apology. He thought about what sheâd asked, then made a decision. âIâll be there tomorrow morning and I can be friendly for Mrs. G.âs sake.â
âExcellent.â She sounded pleased, but he couldnât be sure. âGoodbye, Josh.â
âBye.â He slowly replaced the receiver. He hadnât wanted to see her, but he couldnât let Mrs. G. down. Heâd tolerate Rachel if it killed him.
And when he thought about it, the best way to annihilate any feelings he harbored for Rachel was to be around the woman sheâd become. She was so aloof and distant. Much different than sheâd been in high school. Then sheâd been open and friendly. Always looking for someone she could help. Sheâd needed to be of use.
Being a doctor must fulfill that need for her. But had becoming a doctor made her so cold? He supposed life in the big city could change a person, take warm people and turn them into an icy reflection of their former selves.
âYouâre going to be friendly with Rachel, huh?â Rod broke into his thoughts.
Josh shrugged. âMrs. G. wants to see us both.â
Rod looked pleased. âI might come with you.â
âFine.â He didnât want to discuss Rachel with his dad. Didnât want to hear Rodâs opinion that he shouldnât have let her slip out of his life. Heâd had no choice. She was determined to go. âIâll see you in the morning.â Josh turned to leave but stopped at Rodâs soft chuckle. âWhatâs so funny?â
âI have a pretty good idea what Olivia is up to.â
âYou want to let me in on the secret?â
Rod smacked his lips and grinned. âNo. Iâll let this one play itself out.â
Josh frowned. His father and Mrs. G. were up to something. Rachel was the only girl Rod had ever approved of and Mrs. G., of course, loved her. But no amount of matchmaking was going to work. âYouâre a nut.â
Rod wiggled his brows. âTakes one to know one.â
Josh smiled. He loved his father and was thankful heâd agreed to live with him and Griff when they moved into this house. âDad, what am I going to do with you?â
Rod laughed. âHey, donât forget to call the station.â
âThanks.â
âSleep well, son. I have a feeling youâll need your strength tomorrow.â
Josh shook his head in exasperation. He didnât relish disappointing Mrs. G. and his father, but nothing could bring him and Rachel back together. Their needs, their wants in life were too different. Rachel wanted success, prestige and a position of power. He wanted a stable, secure life with a woman who loved him enough to commit to him.
And Rachel wasnât that woman.
Â
Rachel shielded her eyes against the sunlight streaming through the curtains of Mom G.âs hospital room. She blinked several times, trying to moisten her gritty eyes. Sheâd spent the night sitting beside Mom G.âs bed, too afraid to leave. She didnât want to get a middle-of-the-night call or find an empty bed in themorning. By staying, Rachel hoped she could keep death from claiming Mom G.
She listened to Mom G.âs labored breathing. Helplessness swamped her, making her head pound
