motorcycle at eight o’clock in the morning down a quiet street…”

“A motorcycle?” Her dad asks, his eyebrows furrowing. “Where’d you meet this guy?”

“Oh, my God!” Alia says, her eyes widening. “What’s with all the questions?”

“You meet this motorcycle guy at work?” Her dad asks, placing his coffee on the table.

“Sure, he’s a regular…” Alia says. “Yes, he drives a motorcycle, but he’s not causing problems for anyone…”

“They all cause problems, Alia, all of them.” Her dad says, his voice hissing. “Ever since they came to our town they cause nothing but problems. Drugs. Violence. Recklessness all around!”

“They’re regular customers! If you had a problem serving them you would have kicked them out long ago!” Alia says, squinting her eyes at her father.

“There’s a difference between being a paying customer and being out all night with someone’s daughter.” Her father says, getting up from his chair. “I forbid you from hanging out with those guys ever again!”

“Dad!” Alia says, getting up and following her dad as he walks across the kitchen. “You can’t forbid me from people, I’m not a little girl.”

“If you keep hanging around with them, Alia, you are going to get hurt.” Her dad says, stepping into the hallway. “Guys like that don’t care about you, they only want one thing. Keep away from them!”

“How am I supposed to do my closes if you want me to keep away from half of our customer base, huh?” Alia asks, crossing her arms.

“Serve them. That’s it!” Her dad says, turning around one last time. “Do not get involved with those bikers.”

Alia huffs before turning around and walking over to the counter before reaching into the cupboard for a mug. She pours herself a strong, black cup of joe before bringing it up to her lips and taking a sip.

“He’s right you know.” Her mother says, lightly shaking her head from side to side as she, too, sips from her mug. “They’re rowdy and nothing but trouble, Alia. Find yourself a nice boy, sweetheart…”

“Oh, please.” Alia says, pouring the rest of her coffee down the sink as she cuts off her mother’s lecture.

She sighs, rinsing out her cup before placing it on the rack.

“I’m not going to get in trouble. He’s a good guy, mom. It’s fine.” She says, before turning around and beginning to step down the hallway towards her bedroom. “I’m having a nap before I have to go back to work. Please, quit worrying about it.”

Chapter 8

“Yes. Things are fine.” Alia says into the phone as she cashes out an order, placing the bills into the cash register drawer as she holds the phone with her cheek against her shoulder. “I know, dad.” She says, pushing the drawer shut. “Yes, I’ll be home right after work. And yes, I’ll make sure Jason remembers to keep the light above the sink on…”

Her heart skips in her chest as she watches the heavy wooden door to the bar swing open, six of seven leather vested men walking through the door before making their way over to a table in the back.

“I got to let you go, dad.” Alia says, unable to contain her smile as she watches Leon walk through the door and split away from the rest of his group. “Some people are waiting. Okay. Love you, too.”

She hangs up the phone before resting it down on the counter beside the till as she hurries back behind the bar.

“Long time, no see.” Leon says as he leans on his elbows against the bar top.

“Look who it is…” Alia smirks as she reaches into the cooler and pulls out enough beer for their entire group before beginning to uncap the bottles.

She slides them over to him, holding her hand longer than usual against the neck of the bottle as Leon’s hands brush against her fingers.

“You got me in trouble, you know…” She says, biting her bottom
