and that the women are supposed to just...? Well, that man is not my son.” Landon tried to keep his temper under control while talking to Grandda, but when he went off in several directions at once, he was hard to talk to. “Your mother let him, I guess. He tells those girls that she’s not putting out any more and that—”
“Grandda. I don’t want to hear about my parents’ sex life.” Nodding, Grandda paced in front of him. “Why did you want the two of us to get together? You had to have a reason other than just to get her out of my parents’ house.”
“I did, I did.” When he didn’t say any more, Landon asked him again. “Oh. She’s not human. I don’t know if I told you that or not. Well, she’s more than likely human, like you are, but she’s got this special way about her that lets her find things. Like people, for one thing, and then there are little objects too. I thought maybe she could help you guys out or something. She’s on the run. Poor thing only thinks she’s out for a rest or two, and she’s hiding out from the newspapers a bit. Her father, however, he’s a tad worse than your own, if you know what I mean.”
“You mean that she uses psychometrics.” He nodded at him. “So what does that have to do with her hiding out from the papers? I hope you’re not going to tell me that she’s wanted for something, are you?”
“No, no, nothing like that. Just that they know about her and what she can do, and they don’t let her rest up a bit. Not...she has a ghost with her sometimes. I’m not all that sure who he is. Only seen him a couple of times when I’m there, but...well, I don’t think he’s harmful to her, but he does watch over her a little at times. Not like I do you, but he’s there when she might need him.” That really wasn’t very helpful in figuring out why she was hiding from her father. “Look, son. You’ve been alone long enough. I know that you more than likely won’t marry this girl or anything, but the two of you have more in common than you realize. Not with your seeing ghosts, but with the way you were raised. She’s been in boarding schools all her life. Then there is that thing with her being able to find things. I just thought the two of you could have some fun.”
“Grandda, please tell me you didn’t try and get my parents to marry me off to get me to the house.” He looked shocked and Landon told him he was sorry. “So that part was real. They want me to merge with this other woman so they can be one big, happy, rich family.”
“I’d say that’s not going to happen, don’t you? I’ve not seen one bit of happiness come out of that house since...well, before I passed on. And you weren’t there that much either, so the place sort of went downhill after that.” Grandda shook his head before continuing. “I don’t think this girl is in trouble so much as there are people out looking for her. You know the kind. They want her to tell them things that she might not live long enough to collect on the money they’re promising her. Then there is her father. He’s bad news, but I’m not sure really what he wants her to find. Might be like yours. He might just want to control her.”
“You mean they’d kill her, these people looking for her?” He nodded. “Why? I mean, what sort of things could she be looking to find for them that would cost her life? This father of hers, do you think he is having her hunted? That these people looking for her might be working for him?”
“Don’t know. You’d have to talk to her about it. Oh, and that’s not her name. It’s Dillon Kerrie. I got me somebody to send a letter to Vinnie, that girl that you guys work with sometimes. Anyway, I had him sending her a little note, so that she could have some protection. I guess you took care of that. That Vinnie, she’s going to be mad at me when she finds out it was me that sent it, I think. But I was scared for her, being there all by her lonesome
