in stories than you can explain. Iâm not saying folks canât have happy marriages even though the dolphinâs not there anymore. Look at your daddy and mommaâtheyâre as much in love as ever. But it seems to me Godâs plan got messed up when that dolphin disappeared, and we need to see him back where he belongs.â
Gran had always had a strong streak of the romantic in her, but Chloe hadnât expected this. She didnât know what to say.
âDonât worry about it, Gran. Weâll all find the right someone to love, eventually.â It was the most comforting thing she could think of, though none of the grandchildren had managed a happy ending yet.
âItâs not just that.â The lines in Granâs face deepened as she looked from Chloeâs father, on one side of the room, to his brother, as far away as he could get and still be in the same room.
The breach between her daddy and Uncle Jefferson had existed long before Chloe was born, an established fact all her life. Everybody on the island knew that Uncle Jeff called Daddy a straitlaced prig and a failure, and that Daddy felt his brotherâs ambition had killed off his honor. They kept up a semblance of civility for Granâs sake, but their feud obviously still hurt her.
âIâm sorry,â she said softly.
âNot much we can do about them, Iâm afraid. But as for you young onesâseems to me youâve found someone to love, dolphin or no, havenât you.â
âI donât know. Itâs notâ¦not really serious between usânot yet, anyway.â
Granâs wise old eyes studied Chloe. âDonât think you can fool me, Chloe Elizabeth.â
Her heart stopped. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, I can see how well the two of you fit together. You care about him, donât you?â
She couldnât lie about it with Gran looking at her. âMaybe so. But that doesnât mean itâs going to be a lifetime love or anything.â
Gran patted her hand. âYou just keep in mind that verse I gave you on the day you were baptized. God has plans for you, plans to give you hope and a future. You trust in that, you hear?â
She blinked back tears, thinking of the needlepoint sampler Gran had madeâthe one that went everywhere with her. âIâll try.â
âBesides, now that Lukeâs here, maybe we can help things along.â
Panic ripped through her. âDonât you dare do any matchmaking. If things are meant to happen between us, they will.â
âNo harm in helping it along. I want to see another Caldwell bride before Iâm too old to enjoy it.â
âGranââ
âAre you ladies having a private conversation, or can anyone join in?â
Chloeâs breath caught at the sound of Lukeâs voice. Sheâd been so intent that she hadnât noticed him cross the room to them. She looked up, trying to smile, hoping Gran hadnât heard that betraying little gasp. Hoping even more that Luke hadnât heard it. There were no two ways about itâthe sooner they got back to Chicago and their normal lives, the better for everyone.
âAlways glad to have a good-looking man to talk to.â Gran fluttered her eyelashes at him outrageously. âEspecially one that I havenât known since he was in diapers.â
âGran,â Chloe murmured. Just a few more hours, and weâll be on a plane. Iâll forget this weekend ever happened.
Lukeâs baritone chuckle was like a feather, tickling her skin. âIf you want someone to flirt with, Mrs. Caldwell, Iâm your man.â
âThought I told you to call me âGranâ. Everyone else does. How are you liking Caldwell Cove, now that youâve been here a spell?â
âBeautiful,â he said promptly. âNow I know why Chloe is always talking about this place.â He put his arm around
