the size of four average-sized rooms. It was crammed wall-to-wall with dresses and outfits that even the highest-paid Hollywood celebrities wouldn’t be able to afford. Towards the far end of the room were cabinets and shelves loaded with what seemed to be hundreds of diamond necklaces and bracelets, and pearls galore. And the shoe collection! There were so many high-end designer shoes that I wasn’t sure if I would be able to wear them all during my lifetime. “Wow!” was all I was able to gasp.
As I was leaving the room, I noticed something that had escaped my attention when I entered. There in a tall glass showcase was a long, deep purple, floor-length strapless evening gown. The bottom was ruffled and there were silver broaches sewn into the dress at strategic points. The top of the dress was embroidered with an elaborate gold pattern that worked its way down to the waist. Next to the dress, hanging from an elegant hook, was a eye-mask made of black velvet with a gold trim along the edge. On top there were black feathers sticking out. It looked very old-fashioned and very elegant.
As I was examining the gown and mask, Mari exclaimed, “Don’t you just love it!”
“We picked it out just for you,” squealed Avery.
“ For me?” I said, turning to them in surprise. “Yes, I do like it, it’s… beautiful, but what’s it for?”
Mari and Avery both looked at each other before shouting, “The Halloween Masquerade!” They started jumping around in a little circle for a full minute before giving up. Well, at least they’re happy , I thought as I looked at my Halloween costume one more time. I thought once again of the Halloween bonfire Sadie and Maggie had planned, and how much I wanted to be there.
Chapter 7
The Dream
That night I settled into my new room. Although I wasn’t really sure how I was going to feel about all this change, I thought that maybe I should just give it a chance. One thing was for sure: my new bed didn’t need any getting used to. Oh, yeah, I thought as I luxuriated in the lushness of the comforter, I will totally give this a chance . Just as my head was about to hit the pillow, there was a knock on my door. Ugh! I got out of my comfy bed and made the long walk to the imposing doors of my bedchamber. I opened one of the doors with so much anger that I was surprised the hinges didn’t come off. After the shock of my strength wore off, I saw Kevin standing in front of me, looking every bit as amazed as I was.
“Umm…” he started wearily, “I just wanted to drop off your itinerary for tomorrow…” As he handed me the manila envelope, he kept his eyes still on the door, probably stunned that I wasn’t holding it my hand.
“Are you serious?” I was kind of irritated, ripping the paper from his grasp. He got me out of bed and I think he knew it too. “ That’s the reason you got me out of bed?”
He nodded.
“Wait, weren’t you going to give it to me in the morning?” It was a good question, and I knew I was going to stump him. There was no way he was going to have a comeback.
“I thought so too, but it doesn’t look like it now. I won’t be seeing you until noon. If you look at your sheet, it’s stated right there.”
Okay, he had a comeback.
Yep, there it was, right on the sheet. I hated it when Kevin was right. However, I decided that I wasn’t going to let it get to me tonight. I was too tired to fight, or even look for one.
“All right, thanks…. I guess.” Kevin looked amazed at my thanks, even though my “I guess” was dripping with sarcasm so thick you could pour it over ice cream.
