    ‘Good until
I woke up and found you gone.’
    ‘I couldn’t
sleep so I went to my study to sort out the films. I heard you in the bathroom.’
    ‘Who were
you cross with?’
    ‘What?’
    ‘I heard
you whispering on the phone earlier and you went in the bathroom and raised
your voice. You sounded really cross.’
    ‘I didn’t
want to wake you up so I left the room. It was nothing.’
    ‘O god has
something happened with Lexi and Doug?’
    ‘No, Doug
text they’re fine.’
    ‘Gabe what’s
wrong you still look cross. Is it my fault?’
    ‘It’s not
you baby,’ he said shaking his head as he pushed a hand through his hair. ‘It
was Julie on the phone.’
    ‘Is she ok?’
    ‘Mia, I
know how I’d feel if Kai was still ringing you. I’m not sure we should discuss
this,’ he frowned.
    ‘You still
see each other at swimming Gabe, I’m not going to get all huffy and tell you
that you can’t see her or speak to her anymore. Don’t get me wrong I don’t love
the idea of her being around you so much, but if you’re still friends that’s ok.’
    ‘Thanks,’
he smiled, looking at me surprised. ‘But she wants more than friendship and
can’t seem to accept it’s over.’
    ‘You’ve got
to be really clear with her then, tell her that it’s friends and nothing more,
or she’ll just keep getting her hopes up.’
    ‘I have
been clear with her Mia, I told her it was never going to happen because I was
in love with you and she flipped out on me.’
    ‘O Gabe
what were you thinking?’
    ‘What?’ he said
looking surprised.
    ‘You said
you never told her that you loved her, after nine months together, then
you go and tell her you’re in love with a girl you’ve known for 5 minutes?
Someone you dumped her for?’
    ‘I thought
it would help her get over it,’ he said looking confused. I looked at him
amazed, could he really be that stupid when it came to women?
    ‘No, that
just made it a million times worse for her, just like you did letting Kai know
we’d had sex. You’ve basically just told her your relationship with her meant
nothing to you.’
    ‘She knew
that anyway,’ he shrugged.
    ‘O god Gabe
are you really that clueless? You were with her for nine months, even setting
aside the fact that you weren’t fully committed it will have meant
something to her. She’ll have seen your continued attachment to her as a
sign that you were committed or at least thinking about it becoming more
serious, why else would you stay? No woman wants to think it’s because she’s
just a regular hole to fill.’
    ‘You make
it sound like I abused her Mia,’ he snapped.
    ‘Mentally
you did Gabe, even if it was unintentional. You let her fall in love with you
and think that maybe you’d become more when you had no intention of letting her
in, just like I did with Kai. Take ownership of that and think about
apologising to her because she deserves it.’
    ‘You really
think she was in love with me?’ he asked in amazement.
    ‘Gabe of
course she was,’ I said softly. ‘You’re an easy guy to fall in love with
anyway, without the incredible sex or your dazzling good looks. She’ll have
been clinging to the hope that you’d eventually fall for her too. Why did you
shout at her?’
    ‘She wanted
to come here and talk and I told her she couldn’t. She went mad when she
realised you were at my house and I just lost my cool.’
    ‘Great, she’s
going to knife me isn’t she?’
    ‘It’s me she’s
mad at really Mia, not you, I guess I better think about apologising.’
    ‘Well I
feel sorry for her, I don’t know how I’d react if I ever lost you, I’d be so devastated.’
I went and sat in his lap and stroked his hair and kissed him.
    ‘I told you
baby I’m not going anywhere, you’re stuck with me for life.’
    ‘Even with me
making you eat junk food for dinner?’
    ‘Yes, but I’m
going to have to get up and have a work out tomorrow to make up for it.’
    ‘What
