gotten so far.â
âAnd thatâs why I decided to come here, Reecy . . . when I heard he took my advice.â
âYou didnât have a thing to do with it, Toy,â Jalen told him. âStop trying to get in, man.â
Toy tried to brush Jalen off. âLike I said, when I heard he was going pro, I wanted to come over and let your mother know everything she will be up against.â
I didnât notice until then, but our phone had been ringing off the hook since I walked back in the house.
âMom, arenât you going to get that?â
âBaby, that phone has been ringing like that since you left.â
âWhy?â
âI donât know. I just called a few people, told them about your decision, and ever since, it wonât stop ringing.â
âReecy, you want me to get it?â Tori asked.
âReecy?â Jalen looked at my mom, waiting for her to blow, but it never happened.
âTori, take a message for me, baby, okay.â
Tori looked at Jalen and smiled then walked into the kitchen to get the phone.
âLike I was saying, I think itâs time you sit down and start to look at things from a business perspective.â
My mother asked, âLike what, Toy?â
âAnd what makes you think I wanna sit down with you?â I asked him next.
âThatâs what Iâm saying,â Jalen added.
âBecause you should, young brother. Iâm from the hood. I understand your needs, and Iâm qualified to tell you the odds and ends of marketing on the pro level that will enable you to maximize your profits.â
âOh, the money. Now weâre getting down to it,â I told him
âBut youâre not saying anything, Toy. What do you want from my son?â
âReecy, you know I only want the best for him and, of course, you. I want to represent L . I want to be his agent and get him the most money from the team that drafts him, and endorsements that are sure to follow. Look at the boy! Tell me he couldnât sell anything you put in his hands.â
Tori walked back in and gave my mother a written message from the phone call. Then the phone started to ring again, and she went back to it.
My mother asked him, âSo when do you want us to sign?â
âThe sooner the better. Itâs time to get on the phone now.â
âAnd you care about my son?â
âLook, I still remember him getting in the way on the courts when I was trying to ball,â Toy told her.
âWell, if you cared anything about him, Toy, you wouldnât be here trying to get him to sign. You know just as well as I do, if something happens where he doesnât get picked up in the draft or gets hurt beforehand and signs with an agent he wonât be able to go to college.â
Toy laughed from embarrassment after the words he was searching for couldnât come out. âBut, look, heâs a sure thing.â
Moms told him, âGood-bye, Toy.â
âButââ
I opened the door for him. âYou heard her. Later.â I sat down on the couch, already tired of the drama.
Tori came back in with another message, and Jalen sat on the floor next to the front door.
My mother started to read the messages.
âCan you believe people asking me for a loan? They want to know, when you get your contract, can I loan them some money. I tell you, people are a trip.â She looked over at me. âSo what did your father have to say?â
âForget him. I ainât trying to talk about what he saying. I donât even know why I went over there in the first place.â
âThat was my fault, man. I thought he might want to hear about it, you know. I guess I was thinking about my pops and how he hates to hear what Iâm doing out in these streets by somebody other than me,â Jalen said.
âTell me what he said,â Mom pushed.
âIt wasnât really his father,â Tori let her know.
