cases. âCome and look at this,â he called. âItâs the best thing in the wholeplace.â And he pointed to a photo on the wall.
It was a blown up copy of a stark black and white photo showing a group of First Nations people standing in a circle, intently watching a young warrior. The young man, a dazed look on his face, was straining against two ropes tied around the top of a central pole. The end of each rope was threaded through the skin on the two fleshy parts of his chest.
âSee,â said Danny eagerly. âHeâs being tortured. They are making him pull the ropes out through his skin.â He pointed to the young warriorâs chest. âDo you reckon thatâs blood?â
Joshua glanced at the photo and turned away. âThat shouldnât be here,â he said flatly.
âWhat do you mean?â said Danny. âItâs just an old photo.â
âItâs sacred.â Joshua turned and looked at Danny. âThatâs the Sundance,â he said fiercely. âNo oneâs torturing him. Itâs a sacred ceremony.â Joshua turned away again. âItâs just that you people donât understand. My grandfather says the Sundance should never have been photographed.â
Feeling the tension between them, Danny grappled to understand. âSacred? You mean like in church?â he asked hesitantly.
Joshua nodded. âItâs a sacred ritual. It isnât talked about and it shouldnât be photographed. Even the Sundance lodges are kept secret and are only used once.â
âThe lodges?â questioned Danny.
âTrees are cut and made into a circular frame, like a giant wheel. The Sundance is held inside them. Then thatâs the sacred site.â Joshua swung around urgently to Danny. âLook, this stuffâs secret. Iâm only explaining so you understand. You are not to ask me anything more. OK?â
Danny nodded. âOK, butâ¦â He hesitated. âYou mean itâs still going on?â
Joshua walked away.
Baffled, but not wanting to wreck his new friendship,Danny followed Joshua. But now he wasnât sure about the stone points. Maybe Joshua would get mad when he saw them. Danny stopped in front of the case where they were displayed. âAre these sacred too?â he asked hesitantly.
Joshua walked over and looked at the display. The arrowheads and lance tips were arranged in two circles, with a couple of stone hammer heads in the middle. âDonât think so,â he said, then grinned. âI donât think youâll learn anything new here. Thereâs no information. The points have just been set out in a pretty pattern.â
Danny looked critically at the display. âYouâre right. Thereâs not even any dates telling how old they are.â He pointed to the lower circle of arrowheads. âIt doesnât even say which are arrowheads and which are lance points. Do you know?â
Joshua peered carefully through the glass. âI can tell those are lance points.â He pointed to some elegant long tips arranged at the top of the circle. âThe arrowheads are the small ones.â He pointed to some very small tips at the bottom of the circle. âBut I donât know enough to guess about the in-between sizes, they could be either. Letâs see yours again.â
Danny pulled out the lance tip from his pocket and the boys compared it with the ones in on display.
âIt doesnât look like any here,â said Danny doubtfully. âI guess itâs an in-between size. Where will I find out?â
Joshua looked thoughtfully at Danny. âHave you ever been to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump? To the Interpretive Centre?â
Danny shook his head. âI wanted to go last summer,â he said sadly, âbut we couldnât. There were so many tourists in town we all had to work in the store.â
âCould you get a lift out there next
