plates. âEnough about me. How was your meeting with the Empire ownersâ lawyers?â
Jaclyn looked away from Tiffany and her mother. She scowled. âThe lawyers told me Gerry and Bert want to end the arena contract so they can move the team.â
Violet gasped. âAre you kidding me?â
âNo.â Jaclyn served another guest.
âWhere do they want to go?â
She shrugged, checking the clock. Sheâd have to return to her office soon. âSomeplace where they wonât be competing with another basketball team. Gerry likes the sound of the Nevada Monarchs.â
âNevada?â Violet sounded as baffled as Jaclyn felt. âHave they gotten any offers?â
âHe wouldnât tell me.â
âI canât believe them. Is Bert really on board with Gerryâs plan?â
Jaclyn had been wondering the same thing. âI havenât spoken with him yet.â
âJackie.â Her former teammateâs tone demanded her attention. Violetâs eyes were dark with concern. âI know youâre upset. But, if youâre going to save the team, youâve got to keep your emotions on the sidelines and approach this problem as a business.â
That pulled Jaclyn up short. âI am treating this as a business.â
âThen why donât you know whether Gerry has an offer from another market?â
âHe wouldnât tell me.â Jaclyn pursed her lips. âAnd I was too upset to push.â
âYouâve got to ask. Gerryâs decision to move the team isnât an emotional choice. Itâs a business decision. Youâve got to treat it the same way.â
âYouâre right.â
Violet used her serving spoon to gesture toward Jaclyn. âYou can start by reclaiming your position as general manager. Your grandfather made Gerry interim GM when he was sick and you were taking care of him. Gerryâs been interim for almost two years now. You need to take your spot back before Gerry grows roots.â
Jaclyn relaxed slightly. âI know. I wasnât ready before, but I am now. I gave the firm my two weeksâ notice this morning.â
âGood for you.â Violetâs eyes twinkled. Color warmed her cheeks. âYou have to regain control. Gerry and Bert are on the verge of destroying everything your family helped build. You need to stop them.â
Jaclyn nodded. âIâve also got to figure out a way to increase the franchiseâs revenue.â
Violet smiled as she added potatoes to another plate. Concentrating on Jaclynâs problems seemed to lift her spirits. âPre-sales will shoot up with the Mighty Guinn taking over as head coach.â
âMaybe for the first game. But to sustain sales, weâve got to win.â
âDonât worry. The Mighty Guinn knows how to win.â
Jaclyn paused as their replacements showed up. The two women took over Violet and Jaclynâs stations.
Jaclyn walked beside Violet back to the kitchen area. She tossed her apron and hairnet into the laundry basket. âBut does he know how to coach? You know as well as I do that it takes three things for a team to winâtalent, coaching and chemistry. We have talent. But we need coaching and chemistry to bring it out.â
âYou donât think Marc Guinn has what it takes to bring out the chemistry in the Monarchs?â
âNo, I donât. And, even worse, he doesnât want to.â Jaclyn led the way out of the chapel. She stood at the top of the front steps and swept her gaze over the aging storefronts, pedestrian lunch traffic and persistent street vendors. âAfter three losing seasons, if we donât change the teamâs attitude, we wonât have a prayer of winning.â
