spread within my heart. He moved down farther and placed another kiss upon Leah’s forehead.
“Good morning to my favourite girls,” he said. His eyes were full of happiness, and there was no trace of regret in them.
“Good morning,” I said shyly, feeling the bloom of a blush upon my cheeks.
“Fancy a coffee? Some breakfast, perhaps? You must be ravenous after what we did last night,” he asked.
    I nodded. “I could eat.”
“Good, I’ll call you when it’s ready,” he replied as he moved into the hallway. “Oh, your belongings are by the door. Do you want me to get them?”
“No it’s OK, I can do it,” I said, smiling. He was like a different person – well, not quite. Still Drake, but softer, kinder… as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. Obviously, our little workout had soothed his mind of whatever bad news he’d received last night.
With Leah in my arms, I went to see what I could grab. I needed my toiletries and a comb for the tangles and nest-like state my locks had transformed into.
My stuff was piled against a wall, and I quickly found the bag I needed when the elevator dinged behind me.
Puzzled, I turned. I didn’t think Drake was expecting anyone; perhaps it was more of my things, and I waited for someone from the front desk to appear.
As the doors slid apart my mouth dropped open, and a recognisable face confronted me.
No it couldn’t be… I couldn’t be sure – it’d been years since I’d last seen her, but deep down I knew who it was, and my heart sank.
    Christine.
She was back, and I knew what she’d come for.

“ W ho are you ?” the woman with the long golden hair and impeccably high heels demanded, her eyes narrowed. I must’ve looked a right mess in her presence, with a shirt that barely covered my ass and was not even mine. Thankfully she wouldn’t be aware of the latter, I hoped.
“I…” The words wouldn’t come. I was stumped. What was she doing here? The uncertain walls of my new life started to crumble around me.
“You must be the nanny?” she prompted.
I nodded, not knowing what else to say, and bounced Leah upon my hip.
“Well give her to me then,” Christine said and held her arms out. “I’m her mother.”
My hands clutched Leah, debating if I should do what she asked. I wanted to call out, but the thickness in my throat made it impossible.
“Fuck,” Drake called from the opposite end of the hallway. “Vi, don’t move,” he warned.
I took a step back, and my grip tightened upon the baby.
“What are you doing here, Christine? You’re early.”
My ears pricked up, and I sent a puzzled look his way. Why hadn’t he told me she was coming? He could’ve at least given me a heads up, prepared me for this.
“You know full well what I’m doing, Drake. I’ve come for my baby,” Christine said watching Drake as he advanced forward. “Give her to me,” she continued her eyes now pinned upon me.
My head shook, and Drake was finally by my side. I felt much better now that it was two against one. To think, I almost handed Leah over to her. I would’ve never forgiven myself.
“You abandoned your daughter; you don’t get to waltz back into her life without notice and attempt to take her from me, Christine.”
Christine sighed. “I told you on the phone I don’t want to take her from you, Drake,” she said, her voice getting softer, sweeter with each word. “I want a second chance, with you both.”
Standing between Drake and Christine, I’d never felt more awkward in my life than I did right then. Stuck holding their baby, I was an intruder; I had no right to be there where I didn’t belong.
Drake had gone silent and I looked at him, pleading with my eyes to send her away; she’d had her chance and she’d blown it. Surely, he wasn’t going to let her back into their lives? It was my turn, I wanted to say.
Drake couldn’t look at me. His gaze was still upon Christine. He rubbed his face as if he
