it’s a very good book by one of my favorite author’s. The second book in her ‘Dark Strangers’ series,” I answered.
“Sounds interesting, is it paranormal?” he continued to ask.
“You know about paranormal?” surprised at his question.
“Yes, I do a great deal of reading in various genres,” he replied.
“She writes very well. Erotic paranormal romance is her genre,” I answered.
“I’m Alan, Alan Cain,” as he held out his hand to me.
I shook his hand giving him a strong, firm grip, “Emily.”
“Just Emily?” he asked arching an eyebrow and pinning me with his stare.
Damn those eyes! I couldn’t quit staring at them. “Emily Terbridge,” I replied.
“Well, Emily Terbridge, it’s very pleasant to meet you,” he remarked releasing my hand. “Are you here alone?”
“Is that even an appropriate question to be asking me?” I teased.
“Probably not, but it will tell me whether or not I’m wasting my time!” he smiled answering. His answer totally surprised me as I arched one eyebrow back at him giving him a cold stare. “No, I’m here alone. I’m on a sort of holiday away from everyone I know.”
“Sounds a bit serious and intriguing,” he replied. “Have you had a serious break up?”
I shifted uncomfortably in my chair staring off at the hills. After a few moments of silence I replied in a whisper, “No, nothing like that. My husband passed away twenty months ago. This is the first time I have been away from home overnight since his death. I just needed time away where no one knows me.”
Alan acted truly regretful as he answered, “Emily, I am so sorry. Please forgive me for being so blunt. I had no idea.”
“It’s all right. I still have my moments but it gets better each day. Being away from my well-meaning children will make me stronger,” I reassured him.
We sat in silence together for a time enjoying the scenery and sounds of the rushing creek. After a while, the silence got to me so I asked him, “What about you? Is your family here with you? Are you doing some sightseeing?”
“No, to the family. I lost my spouse too many years ago. My children and grandchildren all live very close to me so when I take a vacation, I go it alone,” he answered. “And to answer your last question, yes, I am sightseeing on my Harley.”
“You have a Harley?” I perked up.
Alan chuckled and answered, “Yes. Do you like to ride?”
“I haven’t ridden on a bike since I was a teenager. My husband didn’t like motorcycles. He thought they were too dangerous,” I responded. “I loved to ride them as long as I didn’t have to drive.”
“We’ll have to take a ride and look at the country side. Maybe even take a picnic lunch? How long are you here for?” Alan asked.
“I will be here a week, then I fly out on Monday for home,” I replied.
“Good. That will give us enough time to do it!” he stated. “Will you have dinner with me tonight?”
“Oh, I don’t know, Alan. All of this is kind of fast for me. I was really just planning on spending the time alone to think, read, and relax,” I told him.
“Just as friends, Emily, nothing more. You will heal faster mentally and emotionally if you are surrounded by experienced friends rather than being all alone. I would like to become friends if you will let me,” he suggested.
Alan sat stoically staring at me as I studied him. He had a commanding presence about him. I wasn’t sure what it was about him but then again, did it really matter?
“Okay, Alan, I don’t see what harm it can do. I would love to have dinner with you tonight,” answering his request.
Alan rose to go back to his cabin placing his hand on my shoulder. “I’ll come by your cabin at seven this evening and we can walk to the restaurant together. How’s that sound?”
“That will be great! I’ll see you then,” I
