papers.â
âYou promise?â
âI promise.â She grinned, and it was a beautiful thing. âIâll take very good care of you, Bram the Merciful.â Her grin grew wider. âTrust me.â

Caiâs big boots landed on the table, right on top of the peacemakerâs important papers. So Ghleanna grabbed him by the ankles with one hand and flipped him back, Cai and the chair slamming to the hard earth-packed floor.
âOy!â Cai demanded. âWhat was that for?â
âYou keep your claws and your big, fat feet off Bramâs books and papers.â
Cai got to his feet and leaned down until they were eye to eye. âAnd if I donât?â
Thatâs when Ghleanna head-butted her younger brother. Since heâd been asking for it and all. And it made her other brothers laugh. She did love making her brothers laugh.
âYou mad cow!â Cai yelled, gripping his head.
âYouâll do as I say, little brother, or that lump on your head will be the least of your problems. Nowââshe looked at all her kinââweâre going to eat and sleep like civilized dragons and no one will start anything. Understood?â
When her brothers only grumbled in response, she cracked her knuckles for emphasis. âUnderstood?â she growled.
âYeah, yeah,â Addolgar quickly told her. âUnderstood.â
âGood.â She smiled and walked over to the royal, who stood a few feet away, watching her.
âSee?â she asked. âIâve got it all under control.â
âYou head-butted your brother,â Bram noted.
âAye.â
âYour brother.â
âSometimes itâs the only way to get through to them. And itâs kind of fun,â she admitted. âMe and Addolgar do it to each other all the time. Since we were hatchlings. Used to drive our Mum insane.â
âI can imagine.â
âDonât worry about us.â Ghleanna motioned him away with her hands. âIâve got control of this lot and I can see that youâre desperate to go and do something important with your books.â
âI should stay. Iâve been told enough Iâm a horrible host. Great peacemakerâhorrible host.â
âYou donât need to be a host with me or my kin. We can take care of ourselves.â
âYou sure you donât mind?â
âIâd tell you if I did. Go on.â
âAll right. But just a few minutes. I just need to write a few letters. I wonât be long. Iâll be back before you know it.â
âSure. No problem.â Ghleanna watched the royal rush off to his study. âWonât be seeing him for hours.â
âSo can we put our feet up on his things now? â Hew asked from behind her.
âNo, you lazy git! And donât test my patience. Head like granite, I have,â Ghleanna reminded him, pointing at her forehead. âJust like our dear Da.â
Bram signed the last letter he needed to finish and leaned back in his chair, stretching his fingers to loosen them up. Thatâs when he saw Ghleanna sitting in the chair across from him.
âHello. Is dinner ready?â
One corner of her mouth quirked up on one side, but she didnât answer.
âWhat?â
âFour hours.â
âFour hours what? Four hours until dinner?â
âFour hours until the suns come up.â
âWhat?â Bram pushed his chair back and strode to the window. He looked outside and winced, realizing when heâd first sat down it had still been light out. Now it was pitch black. Even the moon was gone.
âI got up for some water and realized you were still in here. How are you going to travel all day without any sleep?â
âIâll be fine,â he promised.
âWeâve eaten. My brothers argued over whoâd get to bathe in that big tub first.â She grinned. âI won
