her arousal soaring to frightening heights…Desiree had to be kept away from him, she decided. The girl was young and naive. She wasn’t in love, Belinda reflected. Infatuated, but certainly not in love. The trouble was that she might lose her virginity to Tony. If Tony played one against the other, mother against daughter…he wouldn’t do that, she was sure. Or would he?
Three
Gazing at Desiree’s short skirt and tight T-shirt, Belinda knew that things were going from bad to worse. The girl had announced that she wasn’t going to college, she was taking the day off to spend some time with Tony before he went to Ireland. She pouted her lips as her mother asked about her work and said that she’d catch up while Tony was away.
‘You’ve never taken a day off college,’ Belinda said. ‘And you’ve always been well ahead with your work.’
‘Perhaps it’s time I did have a day off, then,’ Desiree said.
‘Tony didn’t tell me that he was going to Ireland.’
‘Why should he when you went to see him about curtains?’
‘Well, I thought he might have mentioned it.’
‘He’s only there for a couple of days, and then he’s off to Thailand for a week.’
‘Oh, right,’ Belinda said, trying not to sound pleased. ‘So, you won’t be seeing much of him?’
‘No, I won’t. But he did say that we should make the most of our time together. That’s why I’m going to see him now.’
‘Well, I have to go into town. I’ll see you later.’
Leaving the house, Desiree hoped that Tony hadn’t left yet. She’d spent too long in the shower and getting ready, she reflected, as she rang the doorbell. But she’d wanted to look nice for him. Brushing her long black hair away from her face, she rang the bell again. Her stomach sinking, she reckoned that she must have missed him. This wasn’t going to work, she mused dolefully. Her mother going on at her, Tony going away
…Hanging her head, she was about to go home when the door opened.
‘Oh, hi,’ Tony said, smiling at her. ‘You’re bright and early.’
‘I wanted to see you before you left,’ Desiree said, walking into the hall. ‘I hope it’s not too early?’
‘No, no, I’m not leaving until ten. You look lovely, as always.’
‘Thanks. I should be at college, but…As you’re going away, I thought I’d come and see you. What did my mum say when she was here last night?’
‘We chatted about this and that. Nothing much, really.’
‘She said that you only want to be friends with me. Is that right?’
‘You know how I feel about you, Desiree.’
‘But you told my mum that you only wanted to be friends.’
‘Yes, I did. I said that because she worries about you. She thinks that I’m too old for you.’
‘Do you think that?’
‘No, I don’t. But I must admit that I’m finding it difficult to start up a relationship with you.’
‘Why?’
‘Because…To be honest, I want to enjoy a full relationship with you. By full, I mean…’
‘I know what you mean.’ She sighed.
‘With your mum watching you like a hawk, it’s not easy. Take last night, for example. We were just getting to know each other, and she turned up. Where is she now?’
‘At home. She’s going into town later, though.’
‘So, she’ll probably come round in a minute to check up on you?’
‘No, well…She might.’
‘You’re going to have to lie to her, Desiree.’
‘Lie? How? What do you mean?’
‘Don’t say that you’re coming here. Tell her that you’re going somewhere else.’
‘And then sneak round here?’
‘Yes.’
‘I’ve never lied to my mum.’
‘If you want a relationship with me, then it looks as if you’ll have to. Can’t you see that?’
‘Yes, I suppose so.’
‘It would be best to tell her that there’s nothing between us. Just say that we’re friends.’
‘Yes, I will. But…We are more than friends, aren’t we?’
‘Of course we are, Desiree. As I said, you know how I feel about
