turns in her chair to face me. She bows her head and stands up with a bright smile.
“I’m very pleased to meet you, Godmother Hayworth. My name is Robin Sun, and I look forward to working under you in the time to come.” She extends her hand and I take it cautiously, shaking it before looking to the Primary for explanation.
“Initiate Sun has just completed the preliminary interviewing process for potential Godparents.” The Primary leans back in his chair, and there’s a small smirk on his face at my obvious confusion. “Not only did she do a wonderful job in the physical skills assessment, she has also shown promise to be a quick learner.”
“You flatter me, Primary Godfather Johnson.” Robin smiles, turning from me to bow deeply to the large man seated behind the desk.
“I don’t flatter, Initiate Sun. I tell the truth.” My employer nods toward me while he continues speaking. “Godmother Hayworth has been with our Organization for six years. Not only is she excellent in the field, but she also acted as the mentor for her current partner, Harrison Berthold.”
It’s true; I was the one who trained Harrison when he joined the Godparents three years ago. I start to relax a bit, knowing that this meeting wasn’t called because I’m in trouble. But I am a bit nervous about the training. After all, Harrison was the first and only person I trained, and that was years ago. I don’t voice my concerns though—I’m too intimidated by the Primary to say anything.
As though he read my mind, the Primary locks eyes with me. “Now, Godmother Hayworth,” he says, straightening his chair back to its original position, “Initiate Sun is the newest recruit for the Godparent division of the National Security Branch.” He motions one of his broad hands to Robin.
“While her scholastic record and assessment results show her to be a promising individual, she is still new to the program. As such, she will need to be trained by an experienced agent in the field of being a Godparent, and I have selected you to be that trainer. I am aware that it has been some years since you conducted any form of training, but from your work in the field and the accomplishments of your current partner, I am confident that you will still prove yourself to be an excellent teacher.” He raises an eyebrow as he looks down at me. “Do you find this acceptable, Godmother Eliza Hayworth?”
I straighten my spine as I meet his gazeand nod. After all, if he’s confident that I can do it, who am I to disagree? “It would be my honor, Primary Godfather Johnson.”
“Very good. I expect her to be fully trained within the month. Start with the physical exercise regimens, and bring her along for Wish completions in two weeks.” He leans back once more, waving his hand at me absently. “That is all, Godmother Hayworth. You are dismissed.”
I stand up and bow to the man seated behind the desk, then nod my head to the girl who’s going to be my new underling. I slip out of the room, closing the door behind me softly. I practically sprint down the hallway, ready to change out of my tattered costume and tell Harrison about the new developments.
I look down at my destroyed outfit again and can’t help but smile.
Rhonda’s going to kill me.
Wish 5
Harrison mutters something softly, twirling a piece of my hair between his fingers. I stretch; my head is in his lap and we lie together on the couch in my living room. The empty takeout containers of our dinner lie on my coffee table, where we discussed my new assignment over steaming plates of noodles. He traces lazy circles on my shoulder with his other hand. I’m happy, full, and content.
“Hmm?” I murmur, prompting him to speak up. I look up, but Harrison isn’t looking at me. Instead, his eyes are trained on the silver strands of hair in his fingers. He shakes his head slightly, breaking out of his reverie, and repeats himself.
“Did you know,” he starts again, shifting his gaze from my hair
