Jack, Iâll lose, anyway . âOkay,â she replied. âIâll save the statement taking for some other time.â
Jack looked at Laura and added, âGrab a ride back to the office with uniform.â
Laura nodded and said, âIâll talk to the narcs and see if we can come up with an address for Varrick. Also go through our intel and see who he was with when he was arrested last time.â
âCareful about who you talk to in Drug Section,â cautioned Jack.
âI know. Iâll use Sammyâs team and tell them to be discreet.â
âYou, uh, mind filling me in on that?â asked Connie.
âThis stays between us,â answered Jack. âA year and a half ago when we raided the labs, someone in Drug Section tipped off the bad guys and two of the labs had been cleaned out.â
âBastard,â replied Connie. âWho did it?â
âNever identified as far as I know,â replied Jack, looking at Laura for confirmation.
âThat true, Laura?â asked Connie who knew that Lauraâs husband, Elvis, worked for the Anti-Corruption Unit, which handled the heavier cases coming out of Internal Affairs.
âNot yet,â replied Laura. âI spoke to Elvis about it. He says theyâre narrowing it down. The office is broken into teams who work on different projects. By moving members around to different teams it basically becomes a process of elimination to figure out what is being leaked and who knew about it.â
âThe old shell game,â commented Jack.
âSo far they still donât know,â added Laura. âElvis does assure me that Sammyâs team is clean. In fact, Sammy has been helping disseminate bogus info for Elvis on occasion.â
âSo we have a dirty narc to hinder us. Isnât that lovely,â said Connie sarcastically.
âDo you want Varrick arrested if I locate him?â asked Laura.
âWe need to identify his two playmates,â replied Connie. âIf you find him, do surveillance and see who he hangs with. Iâd like to give Forensics a chance to see if they come up with something. The more nails we have to put in their coffins the better.â
Jack sat with Gabriel at her kitchen table while Noah and Faith were in the living room. âThe men in your basement were running a clandestine lab,â said Jack.
âYou found an illegal drug lab in my basement!â said Gabriel in astonishment.
âAll their equipment and chemicals are gone, but they were definitely running a lab.â
âNo, you donât understand,â said Gabriel. âI told you before. They were running a janitorial supply service. What you smell is ââ
âNo,â replied Jack firmly. âI know the man that Noah identified. He is a criminal. Iâm sorry, but I am positive they were not operating a janitorial service.â
âOh, dear,â said Gabriel. She glanced toward the living room and said, âI really am dense.â
âThese guys are good at deceiving people,â said Jack. âThey easily manipulate judges and juries. Itâs their profession. We have found lots of labs operating right under peopleâs noses.â
Gabriel looked at Jack and muttered, âI really am stupid.â
âNo, you simply arenât familiar with how criminals operate. Hind sight is 20/20.â
âThey seemed so nice â¦â Gabriel sighed and added, âMy sister often commented that I was a little too naive.â
âOur concern is that these labs can be very carcinogenic,â said Jack. âMy wife feels it would be a good idea for everyone to be checked out as a precaution. I would like to drive you and your children to B.C. Childrenâs Hospital.â
âYou want to drive us to the hospital now?â asked Gabriel, glancing nervously at Faith who was back lying on the sofa. She paused and stared at Jack briefly. âWhat
