it.â
âA bit awkward with the sword.â He glanced up to the road, grinned. âFun though.â
âLetâs keep the party moving. They probably have guards. Maybe some human servantsâthough it has to be tough keeping humans on tap if thereâs as many vampires in there as you said.â
âI didnât see anyone alive outside of cages,â Glenna told her, ânot when we looked before.â
âThis time itâs live and in person, so if theyâve got any, thatâs who theyâll send out. Hoyt youâd better take point, since you know the area.â
âItâs different, you see itâs different than it was.â Some of what he was feeling leaked into his voice, the emotion and the sorrow. âNature and man have done it. That road above us, and the wall, the tower with the light.â
Looking up, over, he saw his cliffs, the ledge that had saved his life when heâd fought with what Cian had become. Once, he thought, heâd stood up there and called the lightning as easily as a man calls his hound.
It had changed, he couldnât deny it. But still, in the heart of it, it was his place. He made his way through the rocks, over them, through the spray. âThere should be a cave here. And thereâs nothing butâ¦â
He laid his hands on the earth and rock. âThis is not real. This is false.â
âMaybe youâre a little turned around,â Blair began.
âWait.â Glenna made her way over to him, put her hands next to his. âA barrier.â
âConjured,â Hoyt agreed, âto look and feel like the land, but it isnât the land. This isnât earth and rock. Itâs illusion.â
âCan you break it down?â Larkin thumped a fist against the rock, testing.
âHold on.â Frowning, Blair slicked back her damp hair. âSheâs got enough mojo for this, or has someone in there with enough, we donât know what else she has. This is smart.â Blair tested the wall herself. âReally smart. Nobody gets in unless she wants them in. Nobody gets out unless she wants them out.â
âSo we just walk away?â Larkin demanded.
âI didnât say that.â
âThere are more openings, pockets in the wall. Were,â Hoyt corrected. âThis is a powerful spell.â
âAnd nobodyâs curiousâpeople who come here, live hereâabout what happened to them.â Blair nodded. âThatâs powerful, too. She wants her privacy. Weâre going to have to disappoint her.â
Hands on hips, she turned around, searching. âHey, Hoyt, can you and Glenna carve a message into that big rock over there?â
âIt can be done.â
âWhatâs the message?â Glenna asked her.
âGotta think of one, since Up Yours, Bitch seems a little too ordinary.â
âTremble,â Moira murmured, and Blair gave her a nod of approval.
âExcellent. Short, to the point, and just a little cocky. Take care of that, will you? Then weâll get started on the rest.â
âWhat is the rest?â Larkin wanted to know. He gave the wall a frustrated kick. âA stronger message would be to break this spell.â
âYeah, it would, but right now Iâm thinking she doesnâtknow weâre out here. That could be an advantage.â She heard something like a small blast of gunpowder, and turned to see the word Tremble deeply carved into the rock. Below it was another carving, of what she assumed was Lilith. With a stake through her heart.
âHey, nice job. I really like the artwork.â
âA little flourish.â Glenna dusted off her hands. âI paint, and I couldnât resist the dig.â
âWhat do you need to try the transportation spell?â
Glenna blew out a breath. âTime, space, focus, and a hell of a lot of luck.â
âNot from here.â Hoyt shook his
