within the hour. Mind if I do?” he poured himself a cup of coffee.

“I’m stepping out for a break.”

Before I even got out of the office, I saw them pulling in with the body. So much for that fucking break. Heading back inside, I saw Matty trying to chat up Amber. I saved her from hearing another one of his boring cop stories when I walked back in.

    “They’re here.”

Putting on a pair of rubber gloves, I unzipped the body bag. The obnoxious odor of burnt, rotting flesh wafted toward my nostrils. Amber almost vomited at the sight and smell.

“Grab some Vick’s and slather a good layer under your nose. It’ll help cover the stench.”

Matty didn’t bat an eye as he sipped coffee from his Styrofoam cup. He’d sat through plenty of autopsies, and Amber was still kind of new to everything. Performing the autopsy, I noticed something that the hospital had missed. Maybe it was good that they brought him here. The Lords’ symbol was carved into his collar bone, but it was hard to see since it had melted into his flesh when he’d been lit on fire.

“Matty, not only did they burn this one alive, but there’s a symbol on his body.” Pointing to the symbol, “See it right there? They made their mark on him before they sat him on fire.”

“The Lords again? Who the hell are they at war with? This shit’s gettin’ serious.”

After learning about Chaos’s role in the club as the enforcer, I started to wonder if he was somehow involved in these murders. He did abruptly end our time together after receiving that phone call. Could he have dropped me off to go…take care of club business? But why would he go on damned a killing spree? When we’d talked last night, he’d said that somebody was dragging their name through the mud and that his club was clean. Was it a cover-up? Knowing him, there’s no telling what he’s hiding. Like Matty said, his lips were sealed when it came to talking about club business. Just like they always were. Debating on whether or not I should tell Matty that Chaos said his club wasn’t involved, I decided against it. The less people that knew about my little visit to the clubhouse and my dealings with Chaos, the better. I’d almost told Amber, but Matty ruined it before I could even get started.

They were staring at me like a couple of goons when I’d broken my trance. “What?” I snapped.

“What the hell are you thinking about over there? Didn’t you hear us talkin’ to ya?” Matty asked.

“No, I didn’t. I had an idea, though. What do you know about the other local area MCs?”

    “Enough. Why?”

“Are any of them at war with one another? Maybe there’s a shit storm brewing on the home front between them and they’re trying to divert attention. They could be setting up the Lords.”

“Nah, there’s nothin’ like that going on. I’m the Sergeant around here. I’d be the first one to know about something like that going on in my county,” he stuck his thumbs in the waist of his pants, pulling them up while showing off his giant, annoying belt buckle. Knowing him, he’d probably polished it that morning before getting dressed. He acted like it was a goddamned hood ornament for his dick.

“Right, Matty, because the presidents would come running to the big bad cops letting them know they were in trouble, right? You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.”

“Look little missy, I know a thing or two about law enforcement. Why don’t you stick to the dead bodies that can’t do any talkin’ and let me do my job. Besides, I gotta feelin’ that enforcer from the Lords is behind all this.”

“Don’t be an ass, Sergeant.” I narrowed my eyes. “Even though I’m a seasoned medical examiner, sometimes I overlook shit. Nobody wants to admit that they’re not perfect, but maybe it’s possible that you’re overlooking something. Maybe one of the other MC’s fed you a buffet of
