Bennett.
Like a hero, Bennett changed the subject. âWhat have you learned about Neos?â
Yoshiro crossed to the fire and watched the flames, leaving William to answer. âHeâs something new, something nobodyâs faced before. Stronger than any of usâexcept perhaps you, Emma. And except for the Knell, when we all act together.â
âWhat about my parents and brother?â
âTheyâre obsessed with Neosâwith stopping him,â Gabriel said. âThey warned us this might happen. But itâs like theyâve dropped off the face of the earth.â
âThey knew heâd come back as a ghost?â I donât know why I was surprised. I suppose they must have figured out it was Neos who attacked me as a child. And Aunt Rachel had filled in some of the missing pieces.
âThey are not your concern,â Yoshiro said, turning. âNot now. You must focus on Neos. He is gathering strength in the Beyond, summoning wraiths and other, even more unwholesome spirits, forcing them to join his crusade.â
âCrusade against who?â Bennett asked. âEmma?â
âSheâs half of it,â William said. âThe other half is the Knell. Thatâs why weâre taking security even more seriously. Yoshiro hasnât left his archives in weeks, and Gabriel and I donât leave the building anymore.â
âSo whatâre we going to do?â I asked.
âWeâre bringing the veteran teams home,â Gabriel said. âAnd forming new ones.â
âJust like the old days,â Rachel said, with a glint in her eyes.
âIâll need Bennett on my team,â I said. âAnd Natalie.â
William and Yoshiro exchanged a dubious look. Gabriel simply looked on in a gorgeous Spanish manner.
Rachel nodded, though. âEmmaâs not one of our soldiers. She needs to be close to those she loves.â She came and sat beside me. Her proximity unsettled me for some reason, though I was relieved someone was on my side.
âYou know thatâs not wise,â Yoshiro told her. âYou of all people know that personal feelings undermine a group.â
âI wonât do it without them,â I said.
Everyone looked to Yoshiro, and as he debated, I squirmed in my seat. But it wasnât because I was worried about his answer; something didnât feel right. My skin tingled, in a bad way.
I frowned at Bennett. âDo you feel that?â
He shook his head. âWhatâs wrong?â
âThereâs a ghost nearby. Itâsââ My spine felt hot and itchy. âNot a ghost, a wraith.â
â Imposible ,â Gabriel said in Spanish. âWraiths cannot enter the Knell.â
Bennett stood and started drawing his power into his fists, a swirl of light glowing through the flesh and bone. âIf Emma says thereâs a wraith, thereâs a wraith.â
âThis building is a powerful nexus,â William said. âSheâs probably feeling theââ
âRachel!â I said, my eyes widening.
She was quiet and attentive, next to me. Scratching furiously at one of her forearms. Bloody scrapes appeared down her skin.
She twitched a smile. âSkin infection. Poison ivy.â
But it wasnât a rash. I could see an oily swirl superimposed over her. It shifted and shimmered, then vanished into the lines on her arm like filthy water into a drain. My breath caught, and I pushed my awareness beyond my body, letting my power ripple across the room. Until I found it: a tight knot of fear and pain and insatiable hunger.
âEmma?â Bennett said, his hands glowing with power. âEmma! Where is it?â
âItâitâs my aunt,â I gasped. âRachel. Thereâs a wraith inside her.â
âThereâs no way,â Gabriel said. âWraiths canât possess peopleâand this building is completely shielded. You couldnât detect
