Atta girl !
âIâm afraid I havenât had a chance.â
âOh, before I forgetââ Dylan turned back to Gordon ââmy sister and I will be returning tomorrow with Thierry. If he approves our plans, and if you accept my proposal, then weâll be booking Plum Pines as Carla and Thierryâs wedding venue.â
Dollar signs all but flashed in Gordonâs eyes. âThatâs splendid news!â
âCarla has requested that Mia be available for tomorrowâs meeting. Iâm sure that wonât be a problem.â
âWell, Iââ
âNow to my proposal...â he continued, making it obvious that he took Gordonâs agreement for granted. He saw Mia bite her lip, as if to hold back a laugh. The tightness in his chest eased a fraction.
âWhile I understand that Plum Pines has a talented and capable events team, I want to be completely in charge of Carlaâs wedding preparationsâbringing in my own people, et cetera. I understand this isnât how Plum Pines normally operates, but if I promise to acquire all the necessary licenses and, as a show of gratitude, donate...say...a hundred thousand dollars to the Plum Pines Nature Fund, I was hoping you might make an exception.â
Gordonâs fleshy mouth dropped open. He hauled it back into place. âIâm sure we can find a way to accommodate such a reasonable request from such a generous benefactor.â
Dylan rubbed his hands together. âExcellent.â
Gordon Coulter was ridiculously transparent. Rumour had it he was planning to run for mayor next year. A donation as sizable as Dylanâs would be a real feather in his cap. Dylan just hoped the good people of Newcastle were smart enough not to elect such a small-minded bully to office.
He made a note to donate a large sum to Gordonâs opponentâs campaign.
âIf thereâs any further way we can assist you, donât hesitate to ask. Weâre here to provide you with the very best service we can.â
âWell, now that you mention it... Carla would like Mia as her official liaison between FWE and Plum Pines.â
Gordonâs face darkened. âMia doesnât have the necessary training. We can provide you with a far better level of service than that, andââ
âItâs non-negotiable, Iâm afraid.â He spoke calmly. âIf thereâs no Mia thereâll be no Fairweather wedding at Plum Pinesâand, sadly, no hundred-thousand-dollar donation.â
It was as simple as that, and Gordon could take it or leave it. If he refused to let Mia act as liaison then Dylan would whisk her away from Plum Pines and find a position for her in his own organisation. He was always on the lookout for good people.
In fact, poaching her was a damn fine plan.
Gordon wouldnât pass on it, though. Dylan knew his type too well.
âIf youâre happy with Miaâs limited experience...â he began, in that pompous fashion.
âSupremely so.â
âIâll have to insist that she consult with Nora closely,â he blustered, in an attempt to save face.
âAbsolutely.â
Gordon swallowed a few times, his jowls quivering. âIn that case Iâll raise no objections.â
Dylan leant back in his chair. âExcellent.â
Mia leaned forward in hers, her dark gaze skewering Gordon to the spot. âAnd our earlier conversation...?â
His mouth opened and closed before he shuffled upright in his seat. âIn the light of these...new developments, any further action will be suspendedâpending your on-the-job performance from here on in.â
Very slowly she leaned back. Dylan silently took in the way her fingers opened and closed around each other. Eventually she nodded. âVery well.â
Dylan stood. âI understand youâre a busy man, Gordon, so I wonât take up any more of your valuable time. Mia...â He turned to
