the waiter.
âYou have to try these,â Lucas said to the girls while munching on a miniature pie. âTheyâre amazing.â
The children all reached in and the waiter handed each of them a tiny white napkin that bore the initials âGRâ in gold.
âMmm.â Millie smacked her lips together. âThese are delicious.â
The group wandered further into the garden with Lucas charging ahead, eager to explore every inch of it.
âHey, look at this,â he called out. In the middle of one of the outer walls, Lucas had found an opening to what looked like a cave. He could hear the sound of running water coming from within.
The children ran to catch up. Just as they were heading for the entrance, a statuesque woman in a white lace dress stepped out from a side path to blocktheir way. She wore a wide-brimmed hat trimmed with the same delicate fabric and was on the arm of a tall, handsome man.
âYouâre not going in there, are you?â she barked.
Alice-Miranda and her friends looked at the woman, startled.
âItâs just that it might not be safe,â the woman said, her voice softening.
âMarjorie, leave the poor children alone,â the man said, frowning at her. âIâm sure thereâs nothing to be afraid of.â
Alice-Miranda smiled at the couple and held out her hand towards the man. âHello, Iâm Alice-Miranda Highton-Smith-Kennington-Jones.â
âOh, youâre Hugh and Ceeâs little girl.â The man reached out and took her tiny hand into his. âIâm Lloyd Lancaster-Brown and this is my worrywart fiancée, Marjorie Plunkett.â
âItâs lovely to meet you both.â Alice-Miranda was thrilled to meet a member of the Lancaster-Brown family, and introduced her friends to the couple.
âCharmed,â Marjorie said stiffly. She turned to Lucas. âYouâre Lawrence Ridleyâs son, arenât you?â
The boy nodded, wondering how she knew that since he and his father didnât share the samesurname. âHow do you know Her Majesty?â he asked.
âOh, Iâm just a distant relative,â Lloyd replied.
âHardly distant, darling,â Marjorie leapt in. âLloydâs a cousin of Queen Georgianaâs. His grandfather and Her Majestyâs father were brothers.â
Alice-Mirandaâs eyes grew wide. âWas King George your grandfather?â
âYes,â the man said with surprise, âbut how on earth would you know that?â
âI was reading something in the library recently about King George and how he abdicated to marry your grandmother Evelyn,â the child explained.
âWhy did he do that?â Millie asked.
âMarry my grandmother?â Lloyd said with a cheeky grin. âOh, the old girl wasnât that bad. Then again, come to think of it â¦â
Millie laughed, shaking her head. âNo, why did he have to abdicate to marry her?â
Sloane frowned. âIâm confused. Whatâs abdicate mean?â
âItâs when a king or queen stands aside and gives up their claim to the throne,â Alice-Miranda explained.
Lloyd nodded. âYes, thatâs exactly right. Mygrandfather abdicated because my grandmother had been married before, and back then divorce was frowned upon,â he said. âGrandmama Evelyn was the love of his life, although I always found her a little bit on the scary side.â
âSo if your grandfather hadnât abdicated, would you be King now?â Jacinta asked, trying to work out the royal line in her head.
Marjorie nodded. âLloydâs father was the eldest son and he passed away some time ago, so youâre right â Lloyd would have been King.â
âCool,â Lucas said.
Lloyd grimaced. âAll those visits to factories and hospitals are not my thing at all. Iâd much rather leave it to Cousin Gee.â
âAt least you know
