realized just how seductive his voice was? Her nerve endings tingled from the flow of it over her body.
“I’ll take a lemonade, also.” She gave him a secretive smile.
“Alexa, Nadia wants to know if you want the usual.”
“Not today, I feel in need of protein. Give me a minute and then we will be ready to place our orders.” Linda nodded and walked away to get their drinks.
“Why am I craving beef, preferably steak?”
“Your body needs to recharge; the protein in beef combines with your magic, sparking it. You will find that your magic will respond better when it has a power source to draw from.”
“You do know that you should only eat so much beef.”
“You’re right if your body is just using it for fuel to run, walk or any of those other mundane things. You, on the other hand, are using it to fuel your magic. I am willing to bet you have never had a magical occurrence before because you strictly limit your meat intake.”
“I was a vegetarian before I turned sixteen. A few months after my birthday, I ended up in the hospital. I was weak and could barely walk. After exhaustive testing the doctors said my body looked like it needed protein, I laughed. My parents made me eat meat. They said I could have a small intake, whatever it took to get me healthy I would have to eat. The doctors were right. I got stronger, but I always monitored my meat intake.”
“You will have to still monitor your meat intake to make sure you are getting enough on a daily basis, not only to keep yourself strong but power your magic. If you don't have enough fuel in your body, your magic will leech it from your muscles.” Syn shivered. “You won’t find that pleasant at all.”
She nodded her head and looked at the menu again determined to start eating differently.
Linda came back and placed their drinks in front of them. “Have you decided?”
Alexa looked over at Syn. “Are you sure eating a big steak won’t hurt me?”
He nodded and gave her a seductive smile making her insides melt.
“I want the eight-ounce steak medium with fries on the side.” Linda raised her eyebrows but nodded as she took her order.
    “For you, sir?”
“I’ll have the same as Alexa.”
“I’ll let Nadia know.” Linda turned to face Alexa, “She says she will be out shortly.”
    “Thanks.”
“How did you meet your friend?”
“First grade. I used to always like to stand back and watch people even that young. She came to the class maybe three weeks into the school year. Her parents just moved to the area. I think she was a little scared but she was acting brave. She saw me sitting by myself. She pointed me out to the teacher and said I want to sit with her, she’s my best friend. I guess the rest was history. We’ve been best friends ever since.”
“It’s nice to have a friend.”
“It is and she’s the protective sort.”
“I can’t wait to meet her.”
“Don’t worry about that. I’m sure Linda told her all about the guy I’m with and that he’s drop dead gorgeous.”
Syn’s eyes flared to life. “Thank you.”
Alexa blushed; damn her runaway tongue.

Chapter Six

The awkward silence was broken by Nadia bringing plates of food out to them.
“Steak and fries. The two of you really know how to live.” She placed the plates on the table and then reached over to hug Alexa before turning her intense gaze to Syn. “Hi, I’m Nadia.”
Syn reached out to shake the hand she offered him. Her grip was tight making sure he knew she was a woman he didn’t want to mess with.
“I’m Syneca.” He looked her over. Strength sat on her like a shroud.
    “Nice to meet you, Syneca.”
“You also, and please call me Syn.”
She gave him a smile and pulled up a chair. “I can’t stay long. How did you meet Alexa, Syn?”
“I was driving through her parents’ neighborhood on the way to the city when she caught my attention. Her beauty reached out to stroke me and I had to stop and say hello.
